“Jupiterian” French President Emmanuel Macron has written to the French people, reflecting on the failure of the recent snap election to produce a new government, but conveniently forgetting to mention his role in that outcome.

There will be no new Prime Minister or government appointed for some time, President Macron said in a nationally published letter to the people in which he talked up his role as “protector of the higher interests of the Nation”.

Macron congratulated the French people on having rejected the “extreme right” at the ballot box, despite the actual opposite of that having happened. The “extreme right” to which Macron refers — Le Pen’s National Rally (RN), which actually has pretty left-wing economic views, but is in favour of border control — came first place in both rounds of the election in votes cast, rather making a mockery of the President’s claim.

In a result which has inevitably seen questions raised about the suitability of the 1958-vintage French election system for modern voting preferences, RN came first in votes but came third in seats. Macron’s group, meanwhile, came third in votes but second in seats.

A fire broke out Thursday in the spire of the medieval cathedral in Rouen, a major landmark in northern France that was under renovation, but authorities said it was quickly brought under control.

Witnesses told French television they saw smoke emanating from the spire just after midday, and recalled a devastating fire in 2019 at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris that toppled its spire and collapsed its roof.

Congressional hearings have not checked Pentagon “diversity, equity and inclusion” policies that include helping soldiers’ kids get life-altering transgender surgeries and hormones without their parents’ knowledge, finds a report out Thursday. The report from OpenTheBooks, a government spending watchdog, also finds the military told Congress and the public it was ending DEI efforts while actually embedding them deeper into U.S. military agencies and establishing a new “DEI Steering Committee.”

The report comes as Congress works on reauthorizing billions in Pentagon spending through the National Defense Authorization Act. Last year’s NDAA continued requiring taxpayers to fund transgender treatments for soldiers and their children. Twenty House Republicans joined all Democrats in defeating a measure to defund drag shows on U.S. military property, despite evidence many are marketed to children.

A judge nominated by President Joe Biden to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, Sarah Netburn, is facing questions from lawmakers after recommending that a transgender, twice-convicted male sex offender be placed in a female prison.

At the time, the judge, Sarah Netburn, dismissed concerns that the inmate's presence there would pose a threat to incarcerated women.

But two sources tell the Washington Free Beacon that the inmate, William McClain, who goes by July Justine Shelby, allegedly exposed himself to female inmates. According to Debra Nizza, a former Carswell inmate released in 2016 who remains in communication with female inmates at Carswell federal women's prison in Texas, an inmate told her that McClain pulled his penis from his pants before a group of female inmates. Nizza told the Free Beacon that an inmate related to her that Shelby told the women his penis was "intact" and still functional before wagging it at the women.

Liberals on social media seethed in reaction to Democratic lawmakers reportedly admitting behind the scenes that former President Trump isn't a "threat to democracy" as their party loudly claims.

New York Times columnist Ezra Klein appeared on The Bulwark Podcast Tuesday and revealed what "top Democrats" have told him off the record as they panic over whether they should support or abandon President Biden on their ticket.

"People are weighing this set of things. Like, ‘It would be quite unpleasant for me personally to come out against the president as an elected official in the Democratic Party,' and weighing what will happen if Donald Trump wins, and saying, in a revealed preference way, ‘I can live with Donald Trump winning,’" Klein said. "And I've heard people say that to me off the record, to be fair-"

When everything is digital, then what? I.D.’s HERE! A woman doesn’t have to charge her purse, but she does have to charge her cell phone. Purses containing I.D.’s don’t break, malfunction or rely upon the internet, cell phones do. Purses can’t be hacked, but cell phones can. Your purse and hard copy I.D.’s can’t be turned off, but cell phones can. All of this applies to men’s wallets as well. They both can be stolen, although the theft of a cell phone is easier and can be more subtle. It is a leap into the “Brave New World” of digital technology, and this writer suspects it will be ugly!

Wikipedia administrator David Gerard cares a great deal about Reliable Sources. For the past half-decade, he has torn through the website with dozens of daily edits—upwards of fifty thousand, all told—aimed at slashing and burning lines on the site that reference sources deemed unreliable by Wikipedia. He has stepped into dozens of official discussions determining which sources the site should allow people to use, opining on which are Reliable and which are not. He cares so much about Reliable Sources, in fact, that he goes out of his way to provide interviews to journalists who may write about topics he’s passionate about, then returns to the site to ensure someone adds just the right quotes from those sources to Wikipedia articles about those topics and to protect those additions from all who might question them.

Russia will calmly prepare a military response to US plans to station long-range missiles in Germany, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Thursday.

Washington announced plans on Wednesday to start deploying long-range weapons in Germany in 2026, including SM-6 and Tomahawk systems, “as part of planning for enduring stationing of these capabilities in the future.”

The latest American plans are just another escalation of tensions by the West and “one of the elements of intimidation, which today is almost the main component of the NATO and US” approach towards Russia, Ryabkov said.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will hold talks with former US President Donald Trump on Thursday, Bloomberg reports, citing sources familiar with Orban’s schedule.

The meeting comes on the heels of the prime minister’s “peace mission” to Ukraine, and less than a week after he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

According to the report, Orban will meet Trump at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago resort immediately after the conclusion of the NATO summit in Washington. Trump’s campaign representatives didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. The Hungarian government has also yet to comment on the report.

DANA BASH, CNN: That's exactly what I was going to ask Jon about because Jon, you were at that fundraiser as well. I don't know if you spend as much time with President Biden as George Clooney did since he was one of the hosts. But that I'm totally with you, David. That quote was like, wow.

JON FAVREAU, FORMER OBAMA ADVISOR: I mean, it was not surprising to any of us who were at the fundraiser. I was there. Clooney was exactly right. And every single person I talked to at the fundraiser thought the same thing, except for the people working for Joe Biden, or at least they didn't say that.

But I remember my wife, Emily, turned to me after the fundraiser and said, what are we going to do? I mean, and I said, well, there's a debate in a week. Either he'll do well in the debate and we'll think, well, he was just tired because he flew all the way back from Europe and that'll be that or he'll be like this at the debate and then the whole country will be talking about it. So here we are.

The Democratic Party leadership has either been infected by a death wish — or infiltrated by agents of President Putin with a mission to ensure Donald Trump's victory in November.

How come? Think about it.

What's the biggest issue in American politics this summer? Why, Joe Biden's age and his fitness to serve a second term, a matter on which 80 percent of Americans have already concluded he's unfit.

And what's the issue Democrats continue to obsess over, their inability to come to a firm conclusion — should he go or should he stay — guaranteeing that it stays front and centre of every media outlet in every news cycle? Why, the President's fitness to run again and rule for another four years, of course.

The Democrats are doing Trump's work for him.

Sunny Eaton never imagined herself working at the district attorney’s office. A former public defender, she once represented Nashville, Tennessee’s least powerful people, and she liked being the only person in a room willing to stand by someone when no one else would. She spent a decade building her own private practice, but in 2020, she took an unusual job as the director of the conviction-review unit in the Nashville DA’s office. Her assignment was to investigate past cases her office had prosecuted and identify convictions for which there was new evidence of innocence.

The enormousness of the task struck her on her first day on the job, when she stood in the unit’s storage room and took in the view: Three-ring binders, each holding a case flagged for evaluation, stretched from floor to ceiling. The sheer number of cases reflected how much the world had changed over the previous 30 years. DNA analysis and scientific research had exposed the deficiencies of evidence that had, for decades, helped prosecutors win convictions. Many forensic disciplines — from hair and fiber comparison to the analysis of blood spatter, bite marks, burn patterns, shoe and tire impressions and handwriting — were revealed to lack a strong scientific foundation, with some amounting to quackery. Eyewitness identification turned out to be unreliable. Confessions could be elicited from innocent people.

Long-range US missiles are to be deployed periodically in Germany from 2026 for the first time since the Cold War, in a decision announced at Nato's 75th anniversary summit.

The Tomahawk cruise, SM-6 and hypersonic missiles have a significantly longer range than existing missiles, the US and Germany said in a joint statement.

Such missiles would have been banned under a 1988 treaty between the US and former Soviet Union, but the pact fell apart five years ago.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Moscow would react with a "military reponse to the new threat".

"This is just a link in the chain of a course of escalation," he argued, accusing Nato and the US of trying to intimidate Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said during his remarks on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington that it is unlikely that the 31 US-supplied Abrams tanks made much of a difference on the battlefield in Ukraine.

"I'm not sure that such a number of tanks can change the situation in the battle," Zelensky said on Tuesday.

In May, CNN reported, citing Ukrainian crews maintaining the M1 Abrams tanks supplied by the United States, that there were numerous issues with using the armored vehicles on the battlefield.

The crews said that the $10 million vehicles did not have sufficient armor against modern weapons such as drones, thus failing to adequately protect personnel against attacks. One member said the tanks had become Russian forces’ "number one target."

A California judge handed Elon Musk a win in a lawsuit filed over the mass firing of staff at Twitter after he took over the social media platform in October 2022.

Mr. Musk and X Corp. (Twitter was rebranded as X in July 2023) were accused of violating provisions of the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) by allegedly misleading employees about whether he'd honor a severance plan “at least as favorable” as one developed by prior Twitter management, leading some staff to stay at the company longer than they otherwise would have and getting less severance pay than they expected when they were let go.

The class-action lawsuit, which was brought by Courtney McMillian, who oversaw Twitter’s benefits programs, sought at least $500 million in allegedly owed severance pay to some 6,000 laid-off employees.

In a July 9 order, U.S. District Judge Tina Thompson in San Francisco dismissed the complaint against Mr. Musk, arguing that the employees’ claims weren’t covered under ERISA rules in part because the company notified staff after Mr. Musk took over the company that any laid-off staffers would get lower payouts under a new plan.

“Communications were made by Defendants showing that the named Plaintiffs would no longer have access to the earlier plan, which was discontinued or modified greatly,” the judge wrote.

Americans are getting older, but not this old: Social Security records show that 6.5 million people in the US have reached the ripe old age of 112. In reality, only few could possibly be alive. As of last fall, there were only 42 people known to be that old in the entire world.

But Social Security does not have death records for millions of people, with the oldest born in 1869, according to a report by the agency’s inspector general.

Only 13 of the people are still getting Social Security benefits, the report said. But for others Social Security numbers are still active, so a number could be used to report wages, open bank accounts, obtain credit cards or claim fraudulent tax refunds.

“That is a real problem,” said Senator Ron Johnson, a Republican from Wisconsin. “When you have a fake Social Security number, that’s what allows you to fraudulently do all kinds things, claim things like the earned income tax credit or other tax benefits.”

Webmaster addition: Obviously these still-active Social Security numbers can also be used to fake ballots!
